KJC takes charge of judges and prosecutors selection
Pristina, 26 October - The Kosovo Judicial Council (KJC) officially took over the responsibility of selecting and appointing judges and prosecutors on Tuesday (26 October). An official ceremony ended the 30-months long process of vetting and re-appointment, led by the Independent Judicial and Prosecutorial Commission (IJPC).
Candidates for judicial positions, at all levels, were appointed following a vetting and evaluation process which included a professional competency assessment, background investigation, disclosure of finances and review of work performance and professional record.
Kjartan Björnsson, Head of Operations at the EC Liaison Office said: \"The entire process was conducted in strict accordance with European standards and practices. The successful completion of the Re-Appointment Process therefore marks a new chapter for the Kosovo judiciary and prosecution service.\"
In combination with other reform efforts currently under way Law on the Courts, improved court administration, better infrastructure and salary increase this process will ultimately lead to a stronger and independent judiciary.
Around 60% of all newly appointed judges and prosecutors are new in their positions. The rejuvenated judiciary system now has almost 30% of female judges and prosecutors (97), while minorities constitute 4.3% (or 15 candidates) of the total number. During 30 months, more than 345 candidates have been appointed.
The new body in charge, the KJC, is now solely responsible for future process of identification, screening and appointment through a fair, efficient and objective process. The KJC will complete the ongoing process of appointments for another 116 vacant positions.
